VIKINGS IN THE IBERIAN PENINSULA: JAKOBUSLAND AND THE BLAMENN

The first Viking expedition in reaching the Peninsula is thought to have been quite big, judging by the great number of casualties. In 844,
Vikings passed by the coast of Astoria's and Galician, places called JAKOBUSLAND (Santiago's Land) by them, where they found strong
resistance in the king Ramiro 1:s men; continued their journey to the south, in the zone of Al-Andalus, getting to Lisbon and Seville, which was
plundered after destroying its ramparts and before the arrival of the troops of Abderraman II from Cordoba, capital of the omey emirate. There, Vikings
lost 500 men and four boats; they were followed and defeated again; many prisoners were taken and executed, and thirty more boats were burned
up. Survivors surely weren't very happy of their encounter with "BLAMENN" (black men), as they called Saracens.
The second expedition was better planned from the beginning; it developed from 859 to 862. This is the largest pillage campaign ever, and was
directed by the "jarls" Bjorn 'Iron Rib' and Hastein. Galician, Portuguese and Andalusian coasts were again witnesses of the advance of
Danish Vikings, but this time they continued to the Mediterranean sea, making the population of Balearic Islands (used to the visit of pirates)
meet the Nordic terror. Sailing the river Ebro and some of its tributaries, they got to Pamplona, were the king Garcia Iñíguez was kidnapped, for
whose ransom they got a lot of money. They spent the Winter in the French zone of Camargue and went on to the Italian city (nowadays inexistent) of
Luna, where they got a great booty; but when they started the return journey they had lost more than half of their boats.
The next expeditions where organized between 966 and 971, and were composed by Danish people coming from Normandy, where they had
helped the king Richard 'The Fearless' to fight the French. The most important was in 968 (100 boats and over 8,000 men) under the authority
of the 'jarl' Gundraed, in times when the nobility of Christian kingdoms fell to join forces so Vikings continuously plundered Galician shores
for two years; they even got to Santiago de Compostela in 970. But they were finally defeated, after losing many men.
The next incursion is imputed to Olaf Haraldsson himself, who would be the king of Norway, christianizing his country and even declared saint
after his dead, so many churches were raised in his honor all over the North of Europe, from England to Russia. Maybe he was sanctified so
quickly because he had been a true Viking warrior, and consequently, a hero for other people to imitate; it seems as though he was
meritorious enough so to be forgiven by the Roman Church for all the cruelties made against Christians, laic and religious, since his first participation
in an expedition at the age of twelve. There isn't a chronicle as faithful as the ones for previous journeys, but it's known that he sailed by the French
and Spanish coasts, Galician city of Tuy was burned up and his bishop kidnapped. He possibly went to the South then, as the ones who went before
him had done, but there's no evidence of new pillages. His biography tells us that "a majestic looking" individual told him (in dreams) to return to his
country, because he would reign there eternally. Whoever this person was, he surely was right.
There were more expeditions in the 12th century, imputed to inhabitants of Orkney Islands, the last ones in continuing with the old Viking life
and to the Norwegian of king Sigurd in his journey to join the Crusades, who didn't know that the North of Spain was already Christian.
